Try Third Person!
OK, so Kristy recently had a conversation with an old friend and the conversation steered toward the topic of “talking in third person”…don’t ask her how they got onto the topic, but anyway being the clowns that they are, they decided to try it out, and she has to admit it’s pretty damn hard to maintain a conversation speaking in third person. To continue the theme, Kristy decided to try and write in third person, which is the reason for this post…..and she has to say that it is just as difficult, if not more so, than speaking it. Maybe she’ll try and write all future posts in third person, but at this rate I think she may lose interest.
For anyone who hasn’t tried it, Kristy highly recommends grabbing a friend…obviously one who is open to being a clown, and attempting it….
So, despite the fact that she doesn’t really have anything to say of any value, here is a blog post essentially about nothing, and only written for the sake of testing the waters with writing in third person.

Yesterday was a sad day indeed…OK so maybe I’m being a little melodramatic, but in all honesty I was feeling a little depressed. Caleb left for a 10-day holiday at his Dad’s in Katherine. Caleb is only 8 and this is the first time he’s spent an extended period of time with his Dad without Grandma & Poppy there. It’s also the first time Caleb has flown by himself….I believe Qantas call this an “unaccompanied minor”, which sounds so clinical. In all the weeks/months leading up to the trip I was fine, I was excited in fact, both for Caleb and myself because I get a break as well. Even driving to the airport was still fun and exciting, but when it came time to check Caleb in it all went downhill very fast.
No one gave us clear guidance on what was to be done (as there’s special paperwork and protocol for “unaccompanied minors”), and I’m a person who likes clear guidance in unfamiliar situations. This made me a little upset, but I soon got over it.
Then came the time for good-byes, and the way I was feeling you would swear that my baby was going forever…the tears starting welling up in my eyes, so I dropped the sunnies back on to hide the emotion from Caleb, and that dreaded lump in the throat started to develop, making it hard to say what I needed to say without him realising that I was upset. Finally, the flight attendant leads him down the gangway, having a chat the whole way….he didn’t even turn around to wave good-bye. I know I just have to accept that he his growing up and knowing Caleb he was probably trying to chat up the lovely flight attendant….but it’s still hard to swallow.
For the rest of the day I was feeling blue….

My friend Vicky likes a bit of country & western music which I have always found strange, but each to their own I suppose. She had been telling me about the Dixie Chicks and a DVD they have out, called Shut Up & Sing, and she’s been trying to convince me that it looks really good. I had my doubts, as I don’t really like the Dixie Chicks music, and I wasn’t shy about letting her know this.
So, it wasn’t until she sent me a link to the movie trailer that I actually thought, “OK, I should at least watch it before I start saying how terrible it is”, and I must say I was pleasantly surprised.
It doesn’t appear to be a straight music DVD like I initially thought, but more documentary style where the focus is on the series of events that followed the fateful comment by the girls at one of their concerts, “we’re ashamed that the President of the United States is from Texas”.
Let it be known that I won’t be rushing out to buy the DVD , but as soon as Vicky gets it, I will be borrowing it, and I will then post an entry with an educated opinion on the full story.

Last week was a long week at work, so by the time the weekend came I didn’t feel like doing too much. I was looking forward to a couple of days of sitting on the couch doing pretty much nothing. On friday Pete suggested we try something called the Scoot Game….it’s a scavenger hunt making use of local tourist type attractions such as Southbank Parklands, the Museum et al, all in the interest of the Brisbane River Festival. Sounds like lots of fun, but also requiring a bit more energy than I had on the weekend. Hopefully they’ll do run this activity again next year so we can give it a go.
So as it turned out, this weekend was a relaxing one just as I had planned. We watched plenty of movies, did the housework and had a couple of nanna naps. The weekend started on Friday night when Pete, Mum & I went to see The Bourne Ultimatum: Great film….as good as, or possibly even better than the first two.
Saturday consisted of:
Smokin’ Aces, which I really enjoyed. Lots of twists and turns in the story line, and plenty of shooting action. Pete and I had a different opinions on this film, but I don’t believe I’m quite as critical as he is, and I also really like this style of film, where there’s plenty of characters introduced throughout the film, and they all cross paths and their stories interwine by the end. Plenty of medium-big names in this film, and fun to see if you can pick them all out throughout the movie.
The Machinist - strange but good. This film is a little dark, and you’ll find it hard to believe that the star is really Christian Bale. If you’re one of those people who enjoys mainstream blockbusters then this film is probably not for you.
Next…here’s one of the better films I saw over the weekend. Nicholas Cage co-produced and starred in this one about a Las Vegas magician who can see into the future and is wanted by the FBI to help stop a terrorist attack of nuclear proportions. The film is shot really well, and sometimes you’ll not be sure whether the scene is really happening or if it’s one of his visions, but that’s all part of the attraction.
The Contract - John Cusack and Morgan Freeman star in this film about a father (Cusack) and son, who go camping in an attempt to “bond”, and end up taking custody of a wanted assassin (Freeman) and try to return him to the authorities. Enough action to keep the film going and story line has enough twist in it to keep you watching. Enjoyable movie, but I would probably only put it about half way down your “to see” list.
Sunday movies then included:
The Fountain - starring Hugh Jackman and Rachel Weisz. This was a really good film. I’ll have to steal Pete’s phrase here as he hit the nail right on the head….it’s “spectacularly beautiful”. There’s a slightly sombre feel to this story but it leaves you with a sense of spiritual elevation by the end. A definite “must see”!
Last but not least…Robots - Caleb has owned this DVD for a while now, and he’s watched it several times, but Pete andI have only just gotten around to watching it, and as far as animated films go, this one was quite good. I really like when kids films include a good moral lesson, without trying to hammer it in to them. The message in this story was subtle enough that I didn’t want to turn it off, the animation was great and plenty of big names…once again, fun to try and pick the voices. The trashy humour and subtle jokes directed toward adults keeps in interesting for the parents. Another good film to add to the ever-growing list of animated greats.

Father’s Day started out OK. Caleb played and I did the housework while Pete was still snoring away in bed. When he woke up we gave him his presents - a matching apron set from Caleb that says XXS Small Guy, and one that says XXL Large Guy…we thought this would be good for Pete since he has a bad habit of ruining his clothes cooking on the BBQ, and Caleb often likes to help out too - and Thank God You’re Here S1 & S2 from me. I’m pretty sure he was happy with his gifts. After a while I decided to have a lie down since I was tired from getting up early and doing the housework and I was starting to develop a headache. Pete then wakes me up an hour or so later because he wants to get out of the house and do something so he suggests to go to the Brisbane Powerhouse to check out a photography exhibition they have on. I wasn’t so keen since I wasn’t feeling very well but I was happy to tag along. Anyway as it turns out the exhibition was quite good, but I think I made Pete feel bad about dragging me along, but that certainly wasn’t my intention…it was simply that I didn’t really feel up to anything.
To top off the day, when we got home Pete got a message from one of his clients letting him know that the server was down and so he had a quick nap and then had to drive into Brisbane to reboot the server. So it was just Caleb and I for dinner (of one of my favourite meals - corn meat & white sauce with mashed vegies mmm mmmmmm). By the time Pete got home at around 2130, he wasn’t feeling so well and didn’t want his dinner. I can sympathise with him because I had the same ailment last Monday & Tuesday and let me tell you, it’s not pleasant.

So, I am stealing this idea from the homepage of one of the departments at my workplace. It’s along the lines of those “get to know me” emails that are regularly forwarded.
1. At work I am responsible for?
Management and customer reporting; Action Item and Risk Management; Project Management of Minor Projects; Implementation and Maintenance of Project Management Best Practice; Process Improvement.
2. My loved ones are?
My hot partner Pete and my gorgeous son Caleb.
3. My earliest memory is?
Applauding at the end of ET, when Mum took me to see it at the cinema…I think I was 3 and everyone thought I was ‘oh so cute’.
4. At school I was?
The class clown….still am at times.
5. I wish I’d never worn?
Snakeskin pants.
6. I wish I had?
Patience….and maybe valium
7. I wish I hadn’t?
ADD, Hypercondria, Tourretes
8. My most humiliating moment was?
I don’t think I get embarrassed easily….I’ll pretty much do anything if you “physical challenge” me.
9. My happiest moment was?
The birth of Caleb.
10. At home I cook?
Whatever is around…casseroles, curries, pasta…I just don’t do roasts…I love them but for some reason have failed miserably everytime I’ve tried to cook one.
11. I’m very bad at?
Stopping eating at a buffet, drinking slowly, controlling my temper, being patient…and the list goes on.
12. When I was a child I wanted to?
Be a zookeeper, an interior designer, an infant teacher (Kindy - Grade 3), an art teacher, a professional dancer (not that kind of professional dancer…a real one, like on Broadway).
13. What profession other than your own would you like to attempt?
Own and waitress in my own restaurant. Failing that, clothes / music / movie store assistant would be cruisy.
14. What profession would you not like to do?
Anything in a medical / dental field. Or anything with human or animal excrements….sorry Kenny!

AWESOME!!!!!

An SUV….the ultimate Soccer Mum Mobile.

Hitting a Giant Grey kangaroo in my Barina on my way home from work in 2006. I still get scared driving along that road after dark and tend to “Drive Miss Daisy”.
18. What do you owe your parents?
A good education; early exposure to lifeskills such as cooking and housekeeping; and eternal gratitude for all the time and effort (and money) put into my dancing through the years.
19. What’s the trait you find most frustrating about yourself?
My laziness.
20. Who would play you in the film of your life?
haha Angelina Jolie, Rachel Bilson or some equally hot brunette
21. Would you want to live forever?
No, although I do sometimes have subconcious thoughts along the lines of “well if I mess up my life this time, I can always do it over”
22. If you could, what would you want to change about the world?
Well seems that climate change is a big issue at the moment. Disappointing that it’s taken the pollies this long to catch on, but maybe turn back time 50-60 years and start the whole “save the planet” campaign back then. I have lately been wondering how many generations will be able to survive the ever degrading state of Earth and how long it will take for the film Idiocracy to become more than the futuristic parody it is and become reality.
23. What’s your most treasured possession?
While I retained a variety of childhood belongings and own as much as the next person, nothing comes to mind as anything overly treasured.
24. What is your favourite destination?
Wait til I’ve taken a trip or two overseas and then I’ll let you know. For now I’ll have to stay local and go with Caloundra on the Sunshine Coast, Queensland or Melbourne, Victoria.
16. What do you like most about where you grew up?
I grew up in Ipswich, but I loved spending school holidays at Grandma’s house in Boonah where my brother and I would go swimming at the local pool, ride our bikes around the high school across the road, play cars or army men in the dirt under the house, use a hammer and holes in the concrete slab out the back to crack the fresh macadamia nuts off the tree, and Saturday’s leaving the house unlocked and going “up town” to do the shopping at a small independant supermarket, paying 20c for the old mechanical ride outside, and afterwards getting a slush puppie on the way to the pub where we would have lunch and settle in for the afternoon. Anyone over 20 can probably appreciate these types of memories.
