<description>All great tips Kristy....here is something that I learnt from my US trip.

The whole lock situation is a little different in the US because of the whole 9/11 thing. The only locks you are allowed to use are approved TSA locks that have a combination and key entry or the zip ties and if possible try and take a photo of what your bag looked like before it was put through baggage.

TSA locks are used as follows: the key entry is for airport security who have a master key, you will know if your bag has been unlocked because A. your lock will be missing or B. there is a red and green switch near the combination if opened by key this will be green.

Keep in mind if you suspect your bag has been opened go to baggage claim and ask them to witness you opening the bag. The reason behind this is because there should be a piece of paper that says Airport security has opened your bag for random inspection.....if there is no such letter you need to file a report with Baggage Claim. This may seem silly but if you have missing goods or something has been placed in your bag you should be fully protected.

Other than that everything else you mentioned is right on the money.
